Environmental Systems and Societies – ESS

Understand IB Environmental Systems and Societies

Environmental Systems and Societies (ESS) explores how the natural world works and how people interact with it. Students connect environmental processes with human choices, using evidence to discuss problems and possible responses.

If you are studying ESS at SL or HL, individual support can help you connect concepts, work with data and explain your ideas more clearly.

Build understanding, then learn to apply it

ESS brings together topics such as ecosystems, biodiversity, water, climate, resources and human populations. Understanding the links between topics helps you move beyond memorising definitions.

In tutoring sessions, we can use examples and case studies to connect these ideas, then practise applying them to questions. We can also work on interpreting graphs, comparing perspectives and writing focused explanations.

Support at each stage of your ESS course

Starting ESS: build confidence with key terms, concepts and study habits.

Preparing for tests and exams: identify gaps and practise clear, relevant responses.

Working on your IA or EE: discuss your approach, evidence and analysis while developing your own work.
