29 Jul Environmental Management Strategies for IB ESS SL and HL
Environmental management strategies are actions intended to address an environmental issue. In IB ESS, explaining how a strategy works is only the starting point: you also need evidence of its effects and an understanding of the perspectives involved.
Useful categories of strategy
- Prevent pollution: change a process to reduce waste or emissions at their source.
- Use resources more efficiently: reduce energy, water or material demand for a particular activity.
- Protect or restore habitats: conserve existing ecosystems or address damage.
- Use policy and economic tools: compare regulation, taxation and incentives in a stated context.
- Monitor and involve stakeholders: collect evidence and consider the people affected by decisions.
This is a teaching framework, not an official list of eight IB categories. An environmental management system, such as one following ISO 14001, is an organizational framework for managing impacts and improvement; it is not proof that an organization has no environmental impacts.
Organise a strategy comparison
For each strategy, record the environmental issue, how the action is intended to work, the evidence available and a limitation. Add the people affected and the scale of the decision. This comparison helps you move from listing actions to explaining why an option may suit a particular context.
Evaluate a strategy
Identify the issue, the intended outcome and the scale. Compare evidence before and after an intervention where available, but consider other possible causes of change. Discuss effectiveness, costs, practicality and distribution of benefits or disadvantages. State the limits of your evidence.
Connect this to the current IA
The strategy discussion should address an issue central to your investigation and explain tensions between perspectives and their consequences. It is different from describing your sampling method. Primary and secondary evidence can both be useful; quality and relevance matter more than a blanket preference for one source type.
Original practice prompt: Compare two approaches to reducing school food waste. Decide which indicators would test their effectiveness and whose perspectives might conflict. This is a suggested exercise, not a marked IA example.
