ESS Revision Plan: Use Mock Feedback to Guide Practice

Use your ESS mock exam as evidence for a focused revision plan. A six-to-eight-week schedule can help organise practice, but it cannot guarantee a grade. Adapt it to your school deadlines, available time and current understanding.

Start with a diagnostic review

Review your marked answers alongside the questions and markscheme. Separate missing knowledge, misread command terms, calculation errors, weak use of evidence and unfinished responses. Choose two or three priorities rather than assuming that every lost mark has the same cause.

A flexible six-to-eight-week plan

  • Weeks 1–2: identify gaps and revise the relevant concepts. Practise short questions without time pressure before adding a time limit.
  • Weeks 3–4: combine topic review with timed question sets. Check answers and record what you will change next time.
  • Weeks 5–6: attempt an appropriate full paper under the official timing for your level. Review both accuracy and pacing.
  • Weeks 7–8, if available: revisit recurring errors, practise the weakest task types and maintain a manageable routine with breaks.

This is a planning example, not a required number of papers. Use specimen and past papers that fit your current syllabus; older questions may be useful for concepts while differing in format.

Practise the skills each question asks for

For Paper 1, read the command term and use relevant evidence from the resource. A description needs patterns; an explanation needs supported reasons. Do not add an uncertainty paragraph to every answer regardless of the task.

For Paper 2, select evidence that addresses the question and develop reasoning. Evaluation needs a supported judgement, not simply the word “however”. Read the ESS essay structure guide and command terms guide.

Keep IA planning separate from exam revision

Follow your school’s IA timeline and feedback arrangements. Do not assume an investigation can be completed in three weeks or that multiple rounds of assessed-draft feedback are available. Your research, data analysis and writing must be your own.

For the course first assessed in 2026, the IA contributes 25% at SL and 20% at HL. Review the current criteria, including strategy and tensions between perspectives, using the current ESS IA guide and the official IB ESS guide.

Use a simple error log

Need questions for your revision sessions? 50 ESS Practice Questions & Markscheme lets you attempt questions independently, check your reasoning and record what to revisit. For SL & HL, 55-page PDF, €40. LOOK INSIDE — 4 pages.

Record the question, the reason your answer fell short, the correction and the next practice task. After another attempt, note whether the same difficulty returned. This makes your revision priorities visible without relying only on a predicted grade.

Measure progress beyond a predicted grade

Track whether you answer command terms more accurately, support claims with relevant evidence and finish within the time available. Grade boundaries are determined for the examination session; a fixed practice score is not a promise of a final grade.

Ask for help when a specific concept or task remains unclear. Bring the question and your attempt so feedback can focus on a concrete next step.
