The IB Environmental Systems and Societies (ESS) is an interesting subject that is a crossroad between humanities and science. Therefore it is a quite popular course among IB students that are often thrilled by it being in the main stream. Environmental science and ecology are very popular nowadays when we are facing with many environmental issues such as climate change and shortage of fresh water resources. When developing a clear ess IA method you have to be very precise in a targeted location or a pollutant if you are measuring certain pollution levels. You need to think about equipment that you will use and the ways you will use it. Make a plan before you go to the specific location how will you measure something and what needs to be measured. What will influence the data measured. What about the weather, is it a sunny or a rainy day and are you going to be able to get all of your data. Do you need to ask for permission if you are going to measure data in a protected area maybe? Are you going to harm certain plants or animals in the measuring area and how are you going to prevent it?

Writing your ESS IA can be easy and fun! Don’t be overwhelmed if you don’t know where to start! Try to go through the ess curriculum in order to find out what interests do you have when it comes to the environment. Find an environmental issues that you are passionate about and brainstorm what you can use from those. Maybe in your local area there are some human activities that are harming the environment. You can take a walk and write them down. Are you interested in finding out more about these activities? How are they affecting local species and humans living around? What measurements could be undertaken in order to prevent the negative consequences? Write them down and you will be on your way of finding a perfect IB ess ia examples!
