Mastering the ESS Internal Assessment: A Tutor’s Roadmap from Data to Analysis
Often times students have the fear of the IB ESS Internal Assessment (ESS IA). It is overwealming for them to think about writing it and they feel it being the most difficult part of the subject. The IB ESS Internal Assessment is something similar as a lab or fieldwork report. It is a practical work or investigation produced by the ESS students. Some of the skills required when producing a clear ESS IA are critical thinking and independent work.
Being a ESS teacher, tutor and examiner, I have a deep understanding that a successful IB ESS Internal Assessment is more than just about the topic. It has to do with collection of the relevant data, deep data analysis in ESS and using the strategic planning when investigating some topic.
In this blog post i will try to make it easier to understand the ESS IA which can be beneficial for your ESS work and presentation.
Have a clear and focused research question
The tutor will make sure your ESS IA is not too broad or general. Also it is helpful when it comes to your data, did you measure them in a right way? Afterwards, they will check on your variables if you identified them correctly (dependent, independent and controlled variables).
When it comes to the right ESS IA research question it should be connecting social and environmetal aspect in a way. Focusing only on one is not a winning combination. Focused and clear research quetsions should:
- be specific enough for your topic
- logical
- contain variables
- local
Exaple of the weak research question would be: How does acid rain affect my city?
Improved example of the same research question would be: To what extent does acid rain affect the desintegration of the ancient monuments in Rome?
